The Joint Electronic Library is the official online repository of joint doctrine, education and training documents from the Joint Doctrine Branch of the US Department of Defense.

Joint doctrine presents fundamental principles that guide the employment of US military forces in coordinated and integrated action toward a common objective. It promotes a common perspective from which to plan, train, and conduct military operations. It represents what is taught, believed, and advocated as what is right (i.e., what works best). It provides distilled insights and wisdom gained from employing the military instrument of national power in operations to achieve national objectives.

The Joint Staff does not publish hard copies of Joint Publications. However, JFODS5-1: The Joint Forces Operations & Doctrine SMARTbook, 5th Ed. w/Change 1 (Guide to Joint, Multinational & Interorganizational Operations), serves as a comprehensive guide to joint doctrine and operations and includes material from more than a dozen joint publications and references. Designed for use by ALL SERVICES and JOINT FORCES across the tactical, operational and strategic levels of war, references and topics in the 424-page JFODS5-1 include the following:

• JP 1, Doctrine for the Armed Forces of the United States (Jul ’17) – 42 pages of material
• JP 3-0, Joint Operations w/Chg 1 (Oct ’18) – 88 pages of material
