Colonel (Ret'd), United States Marine Corps  - "The USMC Ops SMARTbook is a great idea, please expedite. I'm anxiously awaiting the Naval Ops book later this year. These pubs are tremendous tools for training and educating the next generation of leaders, not to mention using them during actual operations. Thanks for filling a void!"

Army Doctrine 2015 Publications & Updates

Army Doctrine 2015 Publications & Updates

The Lightning Press is excited to be seeing the Army’s new ADP/ADRP publications! We’re actively reviewing and working through them and looking at ways to begin incorporating them into our SMARTbook series of military references.

What we’re seeing with the initial Doctrine 2015 releases is most of the available ADP/ADRP material is at the “macro” level, and the reality is the overwhelming majority of the original core doctrinal material – the enduring principles, fundamentals, concepts, procedures and TTPs as presented in the SMARTbook series — remain UNCHANGED! It’s just most of the material is being REORGANIZED and RESTRUCTURED into the new publication system, which will occur over time as the Army is able to work through it.

So at this point, the impact in many cases equates essentially to a simple change in the reference citations. In fact, so far the released material equates to less than 5% to 10% change in the direct content of the current SMARTbook series. It will not be until the more complete and encompassing series of substantive ATTPs is reworked by the Army over the next 18-24 months before will be able to incorporate the material fully into the SMARTbook series (the Army targets all remaining doctrinal knowledge transitioned to Army techniques publications by Dec 2015).

Over the coming months — and as the Army’s Doctrine 2015 reengineering and restructuring process continues over the next 18 to 24 months — we’ll be offering comprehensive Doctrine 2015 ADP/ADRP SMARTupdates (and pen-and-ink reference citation and terminology change updates) for download through our website as Adobe PDF files (as we’re able to work through them and produce them)!

The Homeland Defense & Civil Support SMARTbook

The Homeland Defense & Civil Support SMARTbook

The military will continue to play a vital role in securing the homeland through the execution of homeland defense (HD) and civil support (CS) missions. CS capabilities are derived from Department of Defense (DOD) warfighting capabilities that could be applied to foreign/ domestic assistance or law enforcement support missions. CS focuses in a domestic context, but extends beyond the standard domestic definition. DOD contributes to homeland security (HS) by conducting HD operations overseas and in the approaches to the US, and by providing CS for disasters and declared emergencies, to designated law enforcement agencies, and to other activities. DOD emergency preparedness contributes to HD and CS missions since it includes all measures to be taken by DOD in advance of an emergency to reduce the loss of life and property and to protect our nation’s institutions.
Estimated Release: TBD.

A Note About Revisions…

The standard life-cycle of an individual official military publication is approximately 5-8 years, with literally hundreds of Service publications all in various stages of publication by numerous, diverse organizations. Because our SMARTbooks are based on groups of related official military publications, our goal is to keep our books as up-to-date as possible by planning revisions following changes in the “core set” of manuals upon which a particular SMARTbook is based.

It generally take us a 4-6 months to research, compile and produce a new or revised title once the “core set” of doctrinal manuals have been made publicly available by the Services. Our projected publication date is an estimate based on the anticipated public release of various Service and DoD publications, of which we have no control.
